8 Solid Tips to Discover and Follow your Passion

8 Solid Tips to Discover and Follow your Passion

Hi there!

Like I said last time, if you don’t love what you do then there’s less chance of you being good at it. It’s not only me, spiritual thinkers like Satsuki Shibuya have been saying “By doing what you love, you inspire and awaken the hearts of others.” So, I can’t be all that wrong when I say that above all, you need to find out what your passion is.

Easy for me to say right? Well, I agree. Giving someone advice to follow one’s passion and actually finding out what you’re passionate about are two separate things. Passion can be something that excites you and/or something that gives you contentment.

I’ve been thinking of ways to discover one’s calling and I’ve come up with this super list on how to find out what it is that you’re made for. So, without further delay, this is how you start the journey:

1. Be positive

Yep, that often repeated advice that we’re all getting tired of hearing. Like it or not, it makes sense. If you start off with a positive attitude, sooner or later you’re going to get there. The only way you’re going to uncover your passion is by believing that there’s something out there for you and that you’re going to be awesome at it.

2. Keep inspiring company

If you’re surrounded by people who haven’t done very well themselves or who love to tell you why you could fail, then your flight is never going to take off. Have people in your life who are inspiring, positive, focused and encouraging. That way every time you do fail (and that may happen many times before you succeed) they’ll be there to inspire you, pick you up and motivate you to keep going.

3. Weed out the negatives

Start with things that you absolutely would never want to do. Make a list of the things you hate doing or situations you intensely dislike being in. Once you have clarity on that, you’re that much clearer about where your options lie.

4. Look for the highs

The best way to find out what you’re good at is by thinking of times and places when you’ve excelled. They could be small events of your life, but important enough for you to remember them. They could be things that you loved doing in childhood or things that you never get bored doing. They are basically situations that get you excited and that have given you a high and a sense of achievement. These are the clues that will lead you to your passion.

5. Draw the picture

Once you know what elements make you happy and have a list of your talents, all you have to do is draw a picture which includes most of them. What I mean is, think about how you can fit all or at least some of those elements into a profession. If a particular occupation includes doing quite a few things that you enjoy and are good at, then in all likelihood you’ve found your passion.

6. Conquer fear

Always when you set out to do something others haven’t, you are going to face objection and resistance. Alternatively, there may be a lot of competition or many apprehensions about what you feel is your area of expertise. Somebody once said “a head full of fears has no space for dreams”. The only way you’re ever going to get there is by casting away all doubts and really going at it.

7. You only get there if you start

Whatever concerns you have, the only way you’re ever going to get started is by STARTING. Make a plan and go for it. Cross the bridges when they come, don’t waste time thinking of “what happens if” otherwise you’ll be left just mulling. If you jump, you’ll learn to swim. You’ll probably gulp down some water, come up gasping for air, but eventually you’ll learn to float. If you’re serious about it, you’re going to make it work.

8. Failure is part of the game

So you just might fail. Well you need the courage to accept that may be this wasn’t really what you’re in the world for. Advice? You made a mistake (we all do), accept and move on. Start over and keep looking, there’s always something that each person is good at.

It takes a lot of courage to get out of your comfort zone and follow your heart. Sometimes it works, sometimes it takes a while. My all time mantra: Have patience, give yourself a break and believe in YOU.

Take care and don’t give up!

“failure is part of the game”
I agree.. if there is no failure – there is no success…

You can only appreciate success after you’ve seen what failure looks like.

  14. Tizzy Says

I spent the last 8 years thinking I was happy being closed off from the world and working from home via my blog and other social media outlets. Recently, I had to go out into the real world and get a “real job”. I found out, over the last few weeks, that I am so much happier now. I was terrified, but I went in trying to be positive, and I have found true happiness. I got lucky in finding a job that I really like and with a bunch of super cool co-workers.
