It’s about celebrating the men today for fathers day.
Like being a mom is a lot of hard work, being a father too takes a lot of effort and continuous learning. All of us who are parents know the physical, mental and emotional responsibility that having a child carries. And when you see a dad who’s really got it together, one can’t help but admire.
Fortunately, for me, one of those dads is my husband, Kolo. I’ve always wondered at the energy, patience, and commitment that he exhibits as a father and I must admit that I myself sometimes learn to be a good parent from him.
With Father’s Day around the corner it is only right that I talk about good fathers and what makes them so and what better example can I give than that of the father of my children, who I see at close quarters doing such a great job every single day.
And what makes him a good dad? Well here’s a list of the top 7 things that I feel makes him a papa to admire.
• Sense of humor
If you know a guy without a sense of humor then you know a dad who can’t be friends with his kids. An open mind always helps make things easier in life and Kolo has a great sense of humor. That’s what makes him one of the best kinds of dads. A great dad knows that everyone can’t be the same. So, he doesn’t expect his kids to like things and behave exactly the way he wants them to. He can take a joke, pass off a mistake as learning and let his children learn by doing. My husband’s open-mindedness proves how self-confident he is and that he can accept the diversity in our family. He allows the boys to explore and be themselves which makes for great life experiences for us all.
• Pillar of strength
I’m always amazed at his internal strength and fortitude. Come what may the father of my children never falters. In hard times he stands with us like an immovable rock. I have yet to see him hesitate or lose heart. His positivity, clarity of thought and the calm with which he handles problems catches on and makes us feel safe and taken care of. It’s amazing how a mentally and emotionally strong individual can take charge of the situation and make things seem easy even when they’re not. I think that’s a great characteristic to have in an individual and especially when you’re a parent.
• Kind but teaches right from wrong
Love your children till you can love no more but teach them right from wrong. That’s what I learn from my husband every day. The kids are expected to pitch in and help around the home. They are taught to take responsibility for their actions and to accept the consequences if they have done wrong. Kolo teaches with kind words and not through force. It is a delight to see understanding seep into my kids’ tiny heads when he has a ‘man to man” with them on what can and cannot be acceptable behavior. That according to me is a father who knows his responsibility. He never forgets to have fun with them and showers them with affection, but the kids know when dad is not going to let them get away with something they’ve done wrong.

• Teaches appreciation
A human being who can appreciate the small things in life is one who is happy and gives happiness to everyone around them. My kids’ dad is a guy who does just that. Our children know the beauty of nature, appreciate people for what they are and are made to realize the value of money. They have been told from a young age that you can’t take anything for granted and that everything we have is a gift which requires gratitude and humility. Kolo staunchly believes in appreciation for what we have and for the kindness that we are shown and lovingly makes sure that our children understand and imbibe these beliefs permanently.
• Always respectful and polite
A man who wants his children to grow up good human beings knows that kids learn by example. My husband realizes that they emulate the way we behave and the things we say. As a result, he is always careful about how he treats women and people in general especially in front of the kids. He remembers to respect opinions, likes and dislikes when with family and friends and makes sure that his kids learn that a person’s tone, behavior, and his language are what earn him/her respect.
• Patient and realistic
Parent’s lots of times make the mistake of expecting children to behave perform and grow in a way they think is right. When you do that, you’re actually imposing your ambitions and assumptions on to them. Each child is different and with a hubby who thinks each should find his own way of handling stuff, I have nothing to worry about. He’s gentle, he’s patient and he’s ready to wait for our children to make mistakes and learn in their own time. That doesn’t mean he isn’t guiding them all the while, but if one our kids chooses to do things a little differently, then he’s willing to wait until he either achieves what he set out to or comes back for advice.
• Self-respect
Finally, what I admire most about Kolo as a father is his self-respect. He sets an example for the kids, never stoops low or loses his dignity even when the situation is out of control. He displays complete control of character no matter what and proves what untiring support he is in our lives. I believe this will go a long way in teaching our children to keep their dignity and be respectable adults. The false impression that “losing it” is actually something to be proud of is a misconception that kids need to be taught about. Only a dad who knows self-respect can show respect to people around him.
Good parents are a valuable asset to every child. They mound and shape a child’s mind, attitude, and character. Great fathers are always those who strive to make their children even better human beings than they are themselves. Not every father is the same but they have some basic traits that make them role models for their children and teach their kids lessons that they will never forget.
My husband makes a positive difference to our children’s lives and I feel pure joy and gratitude when I see that in a world where people are rapidly forgetting their responsibilities, he is a parent who is committed to his children. It’s always a fathers day every time for him.
Let me know if you know a dad who you’d like to talk about too. Plus, share with me how you intend to celebrate this fathers day. What gifts have you bought and what meals are you treating the amazing men in your life to this fathers day.
